Permacutlure Ecological Demonstration Center – Members of Qachuu Aloom from various rural communities combined their efforts to create a ecolocgical demonstration center. Its purpose is to educate visitors and other villagers about sustainable farming and ecological design. The plot of land is used to produce vegetables, seeds, medicinal plants, and basic grains. It is also where we hold workshops for our members, host delegations, and carry out permaculture experiential learning activities. Additionally, the site is used for demonstration of alternative forms of infrastructure. It currently contains a seed storage facility, rain-water catchment tanks , a medicinal plant garden, compost piles, worm-bins for composting, a solar plant drier, a solar energy-powered well, a cob building and a bamboo education center. All construction has been made with inexpensive, locally harvested materials to enable easy replication in the communities. The demonstration site has received many national and international visits and has been praised as a green oasis within an otherwise devastated landscape. The land was an over-grazed cattle pasture commonly thought to be beyond recovery. |
