Six Qachuu Aloom members receive scholarships to Participate in Thirteenth Annual Traditional Agriculture/Permaculture Design Course 2008
For ten days during the month of July, six members of the Qachuu Aloom Association participated in the Traditional Agriculture/Permaculture Course, along with 18 other representatives from Pueblos and Native communities, amongst others. Their participation in the course was made possible thanks to the scholarships provided by the Traditional Native American Farmers’ Association, funding provided by Cuatro Puertas and numerous private supporters.
During the ten days, the Maya-Achi representatives participated in classes and activities, with the support of an interpreter to facilitate Spanish-English communication. Activities included hands-on work and visits to various sustainable farming projects in Santa Clara Pueblo, Picuris Pueblo, and Tesuque Pueblo. As well, various permaculture experts facilitated numerous workshops regarding the principles and ethics of this field of work. These various experiences, coupled by a constant exchange of knowledges, techniques and traditions from all participants, concluded in the design of a permaculture project that was presented by the group and will be implemented in Guatemala.
